The Ashanti South Region formed part of the then Ashanti Region with Kumasi as its capital. Due to the expansion in water supply operations, the then Ashanti Region was divided into three operational Regions:
The Ashanti South Region, as the name implies occupies the southern part of the then Ashanti Region. It has six operational Districts whose boundaries are independent of the normal political administrative boundaries of Local Government.
Trade, commerce and farming are the leading economies in the Region. Other sources of income available relate to substantial gold deposits and other export products such as cocoa and high-quality hardwoods.
SOURCE OF WATER SUPPLY
The Ashanti South Region gets its water supply from the Barekese Headworks which currently produces an average of 22 MGD. Out of this, the Ashanti South Region receives an average of 10 MGD for distribution in four out of the six operational Districts. The other two Districts have their own water supply systems. The Region currently has a customer strength of 40,000. This number increases by an average of one hundred and fifty (150) customers a month through new service connections. This number could increase substantially if the distribution system could be extended to cover new developing communities.
The Ashanti South Region serves two major industrial customers – Guinness Ghana Breweries Limited and Everpure (Bottling Water Plant). Most of the essential government institutions in the Kumasi metropolis are also located in the Ashanti South Region. These include:
