SOURCE OF WATER SUPPLY TO THE REGION

Apart from the Ada District, which sources its water from the Keseve Treatment Plant, the remaining 11 districts rely primarily on the Kpong Headworks for water supply, supplemented by a smaller contribution from the Teshie-Nungua Desalination Plant.

Kpong Treatment Plant

The High-Lift Pumping Station of the New Works from Kpong delivers the treated water to the Tema Terminal Reservoir.

From the Tema Terminal Reservoir, the water is pumped from the Tema Booster Station located at Mile 18, through a 22.5 km long, 800 mm dia. (32”) steel main round parallel to the Accra-Tema Motorway, to the Accra Terminal Reservoir, located at Okponglo (South of Legon).

The Tema Booster has a capacity of about 99,000 m3/day (22 MGD) when operated with three units in series.

Teshie Nungua Desalination

Another source of water supply to the region is the Teshie Nungua Desalination Project which is being implemented through a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) arrangement by Befesa Aqua of Spain. The plant serves the Sakumono and Baatsona communities within the Tema region.
